Description
Rating systems, like LEED, started the sustainable-design revolution in the US that has led to several trends in policymaking related to sustainability throughout the world. This presentation will focus on various codes and standards, such as the International Green Building Code (IgCC) and ASHRAE 189.1, Standard for High-Performance Green Buildings, and how they impact design decisions. Highlights and examples of US legislation related to Buy Clean and low-embodied-carbon procurement also will be presented. A case study will be reviewed highlighting how design decisions may be influenced when comparing upfront carbon, use-phase carbon, or whole-life carbon. The session also will include a review of existing tools related to quantifying embodied carbon.
